Detailed Program Description

Wilder before- and after-school care is a licensed program that focuses on providing a balance of structured vs. unstructured time.  We focus on four core areas: 1) our homework program, where children are encouraged to participate in daily homework activities including reading and literacy activities; 2) active outdoor play including group games and team activities; 3) arts and crafts; and 4) health and science projects.  Children spend a portion of the afternoon in age-divided groups where they can focus more easily on these core areas.  We also have a diverse set of interest areas, from Science and Technology, where children can perform experiments and learn about their natural world, to Dramatic Play, where they can become anything from doctors to chefs and create elaborate fantasy games.  We provide a healthy snack in both the morning and afternoon sessions.  Each month our participants have the chance to become involved in their community through service activities, and families are encouraged to participate in monthly family nights and on our Parent Advisory Board.  On many No-School days we journey on fieldtrips that explore the Puget Sound region and give us a better idea of the rich history of the area, as well as current hubs of interest.  Staff maintain a ratio of between 1:10 and 1:15 with a maximum group size of 30 to assure individual attention and proper supervision.

Program Logistics

Before school: 7-9am

After school: MTThF 3:30-6:30pm, W 2-6:30pm (early dismissal)

We provide full-day care on most in-service, no-school, and half days.  For some No-School Days, the program may combine with Ben Rush YMCA School-Age Care, with specified drop-off and pick-up times at Wilder Elementary.

The center is closed on the following national holidays: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving (including the following Friday), and Christmas Day.  When the national holiday falls on the weekend, we will follow the National observation of that day.  All child care programs will be closed one day prior to the start of summer programs and one day before the start of public schools in late August or early September to allow for staff training and room preparation.

Participant Profile

Wilder YMCA serves children ages 5-12 enrolled at Wilder Elementary on site, no transportation provided (arrangements can be made for participants who are dropped off at Wilder).  Limited financial assistance is available to those who qualify.  Please submit a financial assistance application and income verification.

Staff Qualifications

Wilder YMCA staff meet DSHS licensing standards, with a Program Supervisor and Assistant Teachers who must have previous experience with children, pass background clearances, and have positive reference checks.  All staff have a current TB test, maintain current certifications in CPR and First Aid, and are trained in HIV/Aids and Child Abuse Prevention.  We welcome volunteers who go through a similar background check before they can work directly with the youth in our program.

All payment and registration information must go through the Bellevue YMCA.  The following forms must be turned in to the front office at least 2 days prior to the start date: registration form, immunization record, YMCA membership application, payment information forms, and an enrollment record.

Attendance options include: 1)Year Round Payment Plan ($490), which includes AM/PM care during the school year, all school holidays and in-service days, and automatically enrolls your child in Summer Enrichment (deadline for ’07-’08 is Sept 30, 2007); 2) School Year Payment Plan ($450), which includes AM/PM care during the school year and all school holidays and in-service days; 3) AM-FT ($275), AM care during school year (uses drop-in care for no-school and in-service days); 4) PM-FT ($335), PM care during school year for 4 or 5 consistently-scheduled days per week (uses drop-in care for no-school and in-service days); 5) PM-PT ($260), PM care during school year for 1, 2, or 3 consistently-scheduled days per week (uses drop-in care for no-school and in-service days); 6)AM-PT ($180), AM care during school year for 1, 2, or 3 consistently-scheduled days per week (uses drop-in care for no-school and in-service days).  AM-FT participants from Einstein Elementary pay $185 per month.  Drop-in care is $40 per day, whether the drop-in is for an extra morning or afternoon session, half day, or full day care.

All children who participate in YMCA child care programs must have a current membership that is renewed annually.  The cost is $38.00 per year.  Attendance is on a pre-paid basis with payments due by the 20th of the month prior to rendering service.  Payment is made by Automatic Bank Draft or Automatic Credit card charge.  Payments not received by the 21st of the month will incur a late charge of $20.00.  Enrollment will be discontinued if payment is not received prior to the first day of the service month.  Two weeks written notification prior to the bank draft date is required to chance a child’s attendance schedule or withdraw them from the program.  An increase in fees is planned to occur in January of each year.

In an Emergency

In the case of life-threatening emergencies, a member of our staff will immediately call 911, administer first aid and CPR, and notify the parent/guardian as quickly as possible.  Immediately following an emergency incident, classroom teachers will be responsible for assessing their area, evacuating the classroom, and providing reassurance to children.  When school operations are closed due to inclement weather, the center will also be closed.  Please call the site phone for an updated message.  When school starting times are delayed, the center will delay opening by the same amount of time. Our policies are meant to keep children and staff safe during periods of inclement weather.
