Calling for Kids! Kim Axelrod, President

On behalf of the Lake Washington Schools Foundation, I want to personally thank our community for their overwhelming support of our Calling for Kids campaign.  We know our incredible community truly cares about education, and it was amazingly evident in this campaign.

As of November 30, the campaign raised $23,000 towards our two-year goal of $80,000 to be awarded to the Lake Washington School District for high school science enrichment.

Equally impressive are the students who volunteered to make the calls. High school student representatives from the Lake Washington High School’s FBLA program, Math Club, Swim Team and Sophomore Senate; Redmond High School’s Cheer Squad, Band, Girl’s Basketball and Environmental Club; Eastlake High School’s Band, Drama and Keystone Clubs; Environmental and Adventure School and the International Community School ASBs; as well as students from Evergreen Jr. High, Redmond Jr. High, The Bear Creek School, Juanita High School, Inglewood Jr. High, Rose Hill Jr. High, Eastside Catholic High School, and the Redmond and Eastlake Lacrosse Teams all joined in the effort with enthusiasm and commitment; some even volunteered for two shifts!

This incredible level of support is a testament to the strength and dedication of our community to providing the best possible education for all our children.

Students made phone calls to 8,000 of our 16,000 families. If we missed you, you are still welcome to donate in support of the
Calling for Kids Campaign. Your donation will enable the Lake Washington Schools Foundation to support the Lake Washington School District in their effort to update science labs in our high schools.

Thank you again to our donors, our adult chaperones and volunteers, the Phone-a-Thon Committee and our student volunteers who contributed to the success of this event!

Bringing Science to Life!

In May 2007, seven of the Lake Washington School District’s junior high science departments were challenged to come up with specific projects that would “Bring Science to Life!” Specifically, the Lake Washington Schools Foundation offered junior highs up to $5,000 each to fund projects that would capture the attention and interest of the students with a rich and meaningful experience.

The response was incredible! All seven responded with projects to engage junior high students in ways that were not possible before due to lack of funding.  For example:

  • “Night Time Star Parties” will be occurring at Evergreen and Finn Hill Junior High where students will experience the excitement of seeing stars, planets and moons through a telescope..

  • A Schoolyard Habitat” will be designed at Inglewood Junior High allowing students the opportunity to conduct field research on ecosystems in their own backyard and to see it change over the years.

  • “The Human Sundial” at Rose Hill Junior High will give students the chance to directly experience and study the sun’s relationship with the Earth.

  • "The Stream Limnology Project” at Redmond Junior High provides for an in-depth field research project that focuses on Bear Creek and brings local data into the classroom for analysis and presentation.

In addition, several of the projects partner with community experts and organizations so students can see firsthand the connection between science, careers and life. Also, all of the proposed projects demonstrate the commitment of our teachers to creative and innovative ways to support the current science curriculum. They just needed the additional funding to implement their projects. THANK YOU TO OUR DONORS!

This is one of the many ways the Lake Washington Schools Foundation is bringing community resources (both financial and technical) into our public schools to benefit our students. For specific information about each junior high and the funded projects click on our website at www.lwsf.org
